A Brief History of Green Technology
Many people believe that green technology is a fairly new concept, but that isn’t the case at all. The United States has actually been researching and using green technology longer than you might think. While it’s true that more attention has been paid to it in recent years, it does have some history behind it. Today in the Brightsync blog, we’ll go a little deeper into this history.
Early Green Technology
Believe it or not, there have been examples of green technology for over a century now. Windmills are a good example, but solar energy also existed all the way back in the early 1900s. Wave energy also emerged around this time in California. Although these versions of hydro and solar energy were quite primitive when compared to modern day green technology, it was still a step in the right direction.
Heavy Use of Fossil Fuels
As the United States developed and became more industrial, we started heavily utilizing fossil fuels. Even though we had the capacity for green technology, most industries chose to go this route. It may have been out of convenience, but the truth is there’s not necessarily a great reason for it. It’s expensive, pollutive, and not renewable. As times changed, so did the general view on using fossil fuels as our primary source of energy.
An Inconvenient Truth
Whether you enjoy Al Gore’s documentary on climate change or not, it’s hard to debate that it certainly got people talking. It seems like there was a shift in public opinion around this time on green technology. These days, many companies are expected to make efforts to be more green and sustainable. And why not? Using sustainable and green technology often saves companies money in the long run while reducing their environmental footprint.
As society continues to move forward, green technologies are becoming ever more present. They’re advancing at a rapid rate, and ideally the United States will be completely sustainable in the near future.
